TMZ’s Charles Latibeaudiere on Allegations Against Jay-Z

Hello, everyone! Thank you for joining us today. We have a serious topic to discuss, and it’s one that has caught the attention of many: the recent allegations of rape made against a 13-year-old girl, dating back to 2000, after the MTV Video Music Awards in New York City.

We’re joined by Charles from TMZ to help break down the details of the case. Charles, thank you for being here.

So, Charles, let’s get into it. This lawsuit has been amended. Initially, Jay-Z’s name wasn’t included, but now Tony Busby has added it. What’s the latest on this case?

Charles Latibeaudiere (TMZ): Yes, that’s correct. The lawsuit was first filed back in October, and it initially named Diddy as one of the defendants. The claim is that at the VMA afterparty, Diddy and another unnamed celebrity allegedly raped a 13-year-old girl. A third individual, a woman, reportedly witnessed the incident but was not named at the time.

Recently, Jay-Z’s name was added to the lawsuit after Tony Busby sent a letter to Jay-Z’s legal team. In the letter, Busby claimed that his client identified Jay-Z as the other person involved in the alleged assault. Busby then made an attempt to settle the matter privately, but Jay-Z’s team saw this as extortion and responded with their own lawsuit, which was filed anonymously at first. Eventually, it was revealed that Jay-Z was behind it.

Don Lemon: So Jay-Z filed his own lawsuit because he believed this was an attempt to extort him?

Charles Latibeaudiere: Exactly. Jay-Z’s legal team argued that the demand letter from Busby was an effort to blackmail him. In his response, Jay-Z made it clear that he would not be bullied or intimidated. He rejected the settlement offer and filed a lawsuit to fight back, accusing Busby of trying to exploit the situation.

Don Lemon: That’s pretty intense. Jay-Z has also said that if the allegations are true, the accuser should file criminal charges. Is that part of his strategy?

Charles Latibeaudiere: Yes, it is. In his statement, Jay-Z called on Busby to take the case to the authorities if the allegations are indeed true. He emphasized that if someone is truly a victim of rape, they should want to see the person responsible face criminal charges. Jay-Z’s legal team has been very clear that they have nothing to hide, and they believe the case should be handled by law enforcement, not through a civil lawsuit.

Don Lemon: So even though this is a civil case, could it become a criminal matter?

Charles Latibeaudiere: That’s definitely a possibility. If the alleged victim chooses to involve the police, the case could shift to a criminal investigation. However, given the amount of time that has passed, it could be challenging to build a strong criminal case. But there’s always a chance that authorities could reopen the investigation, especially if there’s new evidence.

Don Lemon: And what about the timing of this? The lawsuit was filed just before the Mufasa premiere, where Jay-Z, Beyoncé, and Blue Ivy were involved. Do you think this was an attempt to distract or embarrass him?

Charles Latibeaudiere: It certainly seems that way. Busby might have hoped that filing the lawsuit right before such a major public event would create a distraction for Jay-Z and his family. Celebrities often avoid major events when they’re dealing with legal issues, but Jay-Z didn’t back down. He attended the premiere with his family, showing that he wasn’t going to let the lawsuit interfere with his life or career.

Don Lemon: What’s next in this case?

Charles Latibeaudiere: The legal process will continue, and one of the next steps could be the judge’s decision on whether or not the victim’s identity will be revealed. Jay-Z’s legal team wants to know who the accuser is to better prepare their defense.
