We can’t get enough of them!
Cardi B and Penn Badgley are officially our new favourite celebrity friends. Who would have thought, eh? Their beautiful bond has been going from strength to strength, ever since they changed their Twitter profile pictures to one another and we couldn’t be anymore here for it. But what exactly sparked this pleasantly surprising friendship between the rapper and the actor?
Let’s take it from the top, it all started when an old video of Penn, who is the star hit Netflix series You, in which he plays murderous stalker Joe Goldberg, resurfaced on the internet. The clip shows the star praising Cardi B in an interview while promoting the first season of You, back in 2018.
“I really appreciate people who have this sort of totally second-nature relationship with [social media]. Cardi B is a great example of that. She has such an authentic relationship. To me, it’s this incredibly nuanced place to be,” he said. “Despite what many might judge as antics and all this, I feel like she has an incredibly authentic relationship to that, and that’s why people like her so much.”
It didn’t take long before social media queen Cardi came across the viral video and was touched by Penn’s words. Here’s what happened next…
The first Twitter exchange
As soon as she’d seen the video, Cardi – who is a big fan on You – responded in the most Cardi way. “OOOOMMFFFGGGGGG HE KNOWS ME !!OMMMGGGG!!!!!!Yoooo like I’m famous famous,” she wrote quote-tweeting the video.
Penn was equally thrilled to be known by Cardi, reciprocating the fan girl energy by simply replying “I-”
The profile picture swap
With their new friendship cemented, the two took things to new heights by swapping their profile pictures to one another. What’s more official than that?
Cardi changed her’s to a picture of Penn in character as Joe Goldberg, while Penn opted for a selfie of a pouting Cardi with blue hair.
This is when fans (us included) really started to stan this friendship.
Netflix joins in with the fun
It didn’t take long for Netflix to get involved, with the streaming platform’s official Twitter account reportedly changing their bio to, “Petition to get Cardi B to guest star in Season 4 of You!”
Honestly, we can already see this happening., especially after Cardi’s response. The WAP singer replied by posting a screenshot of the Netflix bio, writing her own You fantasy scene and actually, it fits pretty seamlessly into the plot, if you ask us.
“So it’s episode 1 and I’m at Paris Fashion week shutting it down! I turn around and there stands YOU Ok finish it off @netflix”
Fans who watched season three will remember that it ended with Joe in Paris, where he is starting a new life after killing his wife Love (Victoria Pedretti) and dropping their baby off on the doorstep of his colleague.
Cardi B gets a letter from Joe
At this point, Cardi B and Penn Badgley are solid mates because the latest point in the friendship saga sees Cardi receiving her very own You merchandise, including a personalised letter from Joe Goldberg himself.
Netflix very fittingly tracked down Cardi’s home address and sent the goodies, much to Cardi’s surprise – though we’re sure she was totally fan-girling over the package, which also included Joe’s iconic blue cap.
Cardi shared a picture of the special gift on Twitter showing the cap and the letter from Joe, which very cleverly threw in some references to her song, WAP.
It read: “HELLO, YOU… My stalking and killing may make me a certified freak, seven days a week, but it also brought me to… you. Cardi B, you have a way with social media. You’re meaningful. Substantive. I just like you. You’re authentic and nuanced…just as you are with your music. You keep me on my toes, the ones that are left, at least. You can’t be caged in, and it’s refreshing.
Can’t wait to see you slaying in this hat, but I certainly hope you don’t disappear.
Au Revoir,
Joe Goldberg.”
We won’t lie and say we aren’t a little jealous because who doesn’t want personalised You merch from the man himself?! But we’re so here for this friendship and the idea of a Cardi B cameo in season four. It just HAS to happen!
