Fans across social media have expressed their sorrow at the news of his passing, taking to X (formerly Twitter) to share their condolences. One user wrote, “Devastated by the news that Phil Lesh has passed away. One of the greatest bass players of all time and a true original in every way. He infused so much weirdness and uniqueness into the heart of American culture. But his tone is immortal. Nothing hits like a Phil bomb. RIP.”

Another fan added, “RIP Phil Lesh. Truly heartbroken. We loved this band and this man for most of our lives. His pioneering spirit and deep, soulful playing shaped the iconic sound of the Dead and influenced many generations. His creative legacy, sense of community, and endless jamming will live on.” A fellow admirer shared, “RIP Phil Lesh. I’ve been a Deadhead my entire adult life. I don’t have words right now to explain how much the music and community this man helped create mean to me, but I am definitely grateful for it. Walk on, Phil. If you see a Deadhead this weekend, give them a hug.”

In addition to his role in Grateful Dead, Lesh was a classically trained trumpet player who collaborated with composers like Luciano Berio and Steve Reich. He was invited to play bass at a 1965 show in Menlo Park, California, with Jerry Garcia’s band, the Warlocks. Garcia, who passed away in 1995, was another co-founder of Grateful Dead and served as the band’s lead singer and guitarist.

Lesh and Garcia are credited with shaping the band’s early albums and co-writing iconic tracks such as “St. Stephen,” “The Eleven,” and “Dark Star.” Later, Lesh established a side project called Phil Lesh and Friends to honor the music of Grateful Dead. He left his mark on all 13 studio albums released by the band from 1967 to 1990.

“I wanted to bring musicians who might not have been exposed to Grateful Dead much into a band and work with them and draw out of them a way to look at the music. It didn’t necessarily have to be teaching, but to pull from them how to look at the music so that they could then play this music not the same way but with the same spirit, with the same perspective and goals that we did,” he once told The New Yorker.

Lesh was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1994. He is survived by his wife, Jill, and their sons, Grahame and Brian.
