Lupita Nyong’o has confirmed that she is single, following speculation about her relationship with Joshua Jackson. In an interview with Harper’s Bazaar UK published on October 9th, the Oscar-winning actress shared that her only companion right now is her cat, Yoyo. She expressed, “My love for my cat is singular. If I’m ever so lucky to be in a romantic relationship again, it’ll be because of him.”
Lupita revealed that Yoyo has been a source of comfort during difficult times, saying, “I was ready to shut that door and lock it and bolt it. He has ensured that my heart remains open.” She adopted Yoyo from the Best Friends Animal Society in October 2023, coinciding with her public outings with Joshua, including a Janelle Monáe concert in Los Angeles.
The two appeared to take their relationship further in March when they enjoyed a vacation in Mexico to celebrate Lupita’s 41st birthday. Prior to this rumored romance, Lupita dated sports commentator Selema Masekela for about a year, announcing their breakup in an emotional Instagram story. In that post, she stated, “It is necessary for me to share a personal truth and publicly dissociate myself from someone I can no longer trust,” reflecting on the heartbreak she experienced.
Despite her past pain, Lupita emphasized her desire to heal and move forward privately. “It’s hard enough to go through heartbreak when the world has an image of you in relation to someone else,” she explained. “It prolongs the healing process because the memory is emblazoned in the public domain.”
As she navigates this new chapter, Lupita remains focused on her personal growth and the joy her cat brings her.
