Why Snoop Dogg Regrets Dissing Eminem

The relationship between Snoop Dogg and Eminem has had its ups and downs, but the public fallout between them in 2020 stands out as one of the most surprising moments in hip-hop history. Snoop Dogg, who had once been a major supporter of Eminem, made controversial comments during a 2020 interview on The Breakfast Club that sparked a public feud with the Detroit rapper. However, by 2021, Snoop admitted that he regretted his actions and recognized the importance of their mutual respect for one another.

In July 2020, Snoop Dogg caused a stir when he appeared on The Breakfast Club and was asked to list his top 10 rappers of all time. To many fans’ shock, he left Eminem off the list completely and downplayed his lyrical ability. Snoop’s comments were pointed: “The great white hope. White rappers had zero respect in rap. Let’s keep that one thousand,” he said, implying that Eminem’s success was largely due to Dr. Dre’s influence rather than his own talent. Snoop added that while Eminem had become a top rapper, he didn’t belong in the top 10, especially compared to iconic figures like Nas, Rakim, Big Daddy Kane, KRS-One, LL Cool J, and Ice Cube. This was seen by many as a direct jab at Eminem’s legacy in the rap game.

For fans and artists alike, Snoop’s remarks were a surprise. Eminem had long admired Snoop and regularly expressed respect for him as one of the greatest figures in hip-hop. The tension reached a breaking point when, months later, Eminem responded in December 2020 with a track titled “Zeus” from his album Music to Be Murdered By – Side B. In the song, Eminem rapped, “And as far as squashing beef, I’m used to people knocking me, but just not in my can,” signaling that he was hurt by Snoop’s criticism. Eminem further explained in interviews that while he understood Snoop’s opinion about not ranking him in his top 10, it was the tone of his words and the final comment—”I can live without that”—that crossed the line for him.

Snoop, however, did not immediately back down. In response to Eminem’s track, he posted a laughing emoji on Instagram and taunted Eminem, saying, “Pray I don’t answer that soft [expletive].” This back-and-forth only intensified the feud, and in December 2020, Eminem appeared on Shade 45, explaining that while he had no problem with Snoop’s opinion, the disrespectful tone was what bothered him the most. He was confused, given that both artists had always been on the same team, and Snoop had never publicly disrespected him before.

However, in 2021, after Dr. Dre was hospitalized following a brain aneurysm, the feud between Snoop and Eminem began to heal. In an interview with SiriusXM in September 2022, Eminem explained that he and Snoop had cleared the air following Dre’s health scare. Both artists realized how petty their disagreement had become in the face of such a serious situation. “This is stupid. We’re brothers. We shouldn’t be beefing,” Eminem said, recalling the conversation that led to their reconciliation.

Snoop Dogg also expressed regret for his actions during this time. In an interview with The Breakfast Club in October 2021, Snoop admitted that his comments were “out of pocket” and stated, “We love hip-hop so much, we’re competitive, we’re battle rappers, so that was supposed to trigger that in him.” He went on to explain that the disrespect wasn’t intentional, but rather a product of their competitive nature. “We’re brothers and we’re family,” he said, acknowledging the importance of mutual respect in their relationship and how they needed to communicate more positively about each other in public.

This reconciliation culminated in 2022 with their first collaboration in over two decades, “From the D to the LBC,” which was featured on Eminem’s Curtain Call 2 album. The song’s music video even showcased both artists as “Bored Apes,” a nod to their shared interest in NFTs. Additionally, the pair reunited for a historic performance at the Super Bowl 56 halftime show in February 2022, marking a full circle moment for both artists.

Snoop’s public regret about dissing Eminem reflects the understanding that their relationship is built on years of mutual respect and shared history. While their rivalry might have flared up in 2020, the reconciliation shows that their bond, fueled by Dr. Dre’s influence and their mutual love for hip-hop, is too strong to be torn apart by petty disagreements. Through their conversations and eventual collaboration, Snoop Dogg and Eminem proved that in the world of hip-hop, respect and loyalty ultimately outweigh personal conflicts.
