The CFB Playoff Rankings Just Got BLOWN UP 🤯

The chaos of the college football season just hit a new level. With the final weekend of the regular season upon us, next week brings us Conference Championship week, and shortly after, the final College Football Playoff rankings will be revealed. That’s when we’ll know which 12 teams are vying for the national championship. But as I’m recording this, the weekend isn’t quite over, and several key games are still to be played. However, we’ve already seen enough to make the College Football Playoff picture a whole lot messier than expected. Buckle up, because the rankings just got blown up.

Tulane’s Playoff Hopes Are Shattered

First, let’s talk about Thursday’s upset where No. 17 Tulane lost to Memphis at home. While they’re still heading to the American Conference Championship, this loss effectively ends their playoff hopes. Tulane was in the conversation for a potential playoff spot—if they kept winning and got a little help from other teams. But with this loss, they’re officially out of the running.

Georgia Gets by, But the Drama Continues

Next, let’s discuss Georgia. They narrowly escaped Georgia Tech with a 2-point victory. If Georgia had lost that game, they would have had three losses, and the playoff picture would have gotten really tricky. But thanks to the win, they stay in the hunt for a College Football Playoff spot. However, if they lose to Texas in the SEC Championship, Georgia could become the first 3-loss team to make the playoff. It’s a scenario that would spark major debate, but if any team could make it happen, it’s probably Georgia.

Ohio State’s Shocking Loss

Now, let’s talk about the biggest upset of the weekend—Michigan’s stunning victory over No. 2 Ohio State. Michigan, a 21-point underdog, went into Ohio State and pulled off a 3-point win. This loss throws a major wrench into Ohio State’s playoff hopes. With the loss, Ohio State is no longer in the Big Ten Championship, and it’s now Penn State who will be taking that spot.

But here’s the twist: despite the shocking loss, Ohio State’s playoff chances are far from over. The loss will likely drop them in the rankings, but unless the committee decides to drop them drastically (which seems unlikely), Ohio State will probably fall to around No. 6 or 7 and stay in the playoff hunt. However, they won’t be playing in the Big Ten Championship, so they won’t have a chance to earn another win. With only two losses, they should still secure a spot in the top 12, but they definitely won’t be hosting a home playoff game after such an embarrassing loss.

ACC Chaos: Clemson Stays Alive

Over in the ACC, things got crazy when Miami needed a win to advance to the ACC Championship but lost 42-38 to Syracuse. This opens the door for Clemson, who will now face SMU in the ACC title game. Had Miami won, they would have been in the playoff mix, and Clemson would have been out. Now, with a chance to win the ACC Championship and secure an automatic bid, Clemson’s playoff hopes are very much alive.

The real madness comes if Clemson beats SMU. You could have three ACC teams—Clemson, SMU, and Miami—competing for playoff spots, when many thought the conference would only have one team in the hunt. It’s going to be fascinating to see how the committee ranks these teams and how things shake out next week.

South Carolina Climbing the Rankings

Another team that’s moving up is South Carolina. They picked up a victory over Clemson and have been on fire for the past month. With a 9-3 record, South Carolina is climbing the rankings and staying in the playoff conversation. However, they won’t be playing in the SEC Championship, which means they can’t add another win to their resume. Still, if some things break their way, they might sneak into the playoff discussion.

Arizona State Dominates, But Still Has Work to Do

And finally, my Arizona State Sun Devils had a massive 49-7 win over Arizona. Arizona State has been on a roll lately and proved they’re one of the top teams in college football right now. They’re still waiting to officially secure a spot in the Big 12 Championship, and they need a couple of other outcomes to go their way. If they make it to the Big 12 title game and win, they’ll be one step closer to securing a playoff spot.

As the weekend wraps up, the College Football Playoff picture has been completely blown up. Ohio State’s shocking loss, Miami’s upset, and Clemson’s resurgence have all thrown a wrench into what we thought we knew about the playoff race. With Conference Championship week coming up, everything is still in play. It’s going to be a crazy finish to the season, and I can’t wait to see how the rankings will shake out.
