Merab Dvalishvili on a Title Fight Against Umar Nurmagomedov: “I Will Fight Him, But He Doesn’t Deserve a Title Shot”

In a recent interview, UFC bantamweight contender Merab Dvalishvili shared his thoughts on a potential title fight against undefeated Umar Nurmagomedov, the rising star in the division. Although Dvalishvili expressed no hesitation in accepting a fight with Nurmagomedov, he made it clear that he does not believe Nurmagomedov deserves a title shot just yet.

Merab Dvalishvili: Umar Nurmagomedov không xứng lên đài với tôi

Dvalishvili, who has been on a dominant winning streak, was asked about his thoughts on facing Nurmagomedov, the younger cousin of UFC legend Khabib Nurmagomedov. Despite his respect for Umar’s skills, Dvalishvili took issue with what he sees as Nurmagomedov’s relatively light competition thus far.

While he acknowledged that Nurmagomedov had impressive victories, including his win over Corey Sanhagen, Dvalishvili pointed out that the Russian fighter’s resume still lacks significant, high-level opposition. “He hasn’t fought the top contenders consistently. He got one win over a top-15 opponent, and now they’re pushing him for a title shot,” said Dvalishvili. “For me, he doesn’t deserve it yet. He needs to fight more top-level competition before even thinking about a title.”

Dvalishvili also emphasized that, as the current champion, he has the right to seek big payday fights, and a title fight with Umar could certainly sell as a major event. “If the UFC offers me that fight, of course I’ll accept it,” he said. “But I don’t think he’s earned it yet.”

The Georgian-born fighter also made it clear that he respects other top fighters who have been in the game longer and fought tougher opponents. He cited former champions like Kamaru Usman and Jose Aldo, who have fought and defeated many of the sport’s best.

Despite the potential for a big showdown, Dvalishvili stressed that he is not someone who is interested in hype or “easy fights.” He wants to face the toughest challenges, but believes Nurmagomedov still has some work to do before entering the title picture.

In conclusion, while Dvalishvili would not shy away from a fight against Umar Nurmagomedov, he expressed his belief that the undefeated Russian fighter still has more to prove in the UFC before earning a shot at the title. For now, Dvalishvili is focused on continuing to build his legacy and maintaining his spot as one of the top fighters in the bantamweight division.
