In a heartfelt exclusive interview with People published on November 3rd, James Van Der Beek opened up about his private battle with colorectal cancer. The actor, known for his role in Dawson’s Creek, shared the news with transparency and hope, stating, “I have colorectal cancer. I’ve been privately dealing with this diagnosis and have been taking steps to resolve it with the support of my incredible family.” He emphasized that he remains optimistic about his health, adding, “There’s reason for optimism and I’m feeling good.”
Colorectal cancer begins as a growth of cells in the large intestine or rectum, and while it is most commonly diagnosed in older adults, it can affect individuals at any age. Fortunately, multiple treatment options are available, including surgery, chemotherapy, and immunotherapy.
At 47 years old, James continues to pursue his acting career despite his health challenges. He is set to star in the upcoming 2B original film Sideline the QB and Me, which premieres later this month. Earlier this year, he also made a cameo on the CW drama Walker, showcasing his commitment to his work.
As a devoted father of six—Olivia (14), Joshua (12), Annabelle (10), Amelia (8), Gwendolyn (6), and Jeremiah (3)—James is prioritizing family time during this health battle. In a previous interview with E! News, he discussed the importance of one-on-one time with each of his children, saying, “That is the trickiest thing… It’s that dedicated one-on-one time that needs the most attention.” He shared how he strategically plans activities based on his kids’ interests, revealing, “Somebody just invited us to an Austin FC soccer match; which child do I want to take? If they get really excited, then you know you’ve picked the right one.”
James reflected on the joy of experiencing life’s moments with his children, stating, “That’s the best thing about being a parent—getting to experience that kind of stuff with your kids.”
As he navigates this challenging chapter, James Van Der Beek’s openness about his health journey serves as an inspiration. Our thoughts are with him as he focuses on recovery and cherishes precious moments with his family.
