“HEAR AND NOW: ‘For the first time in 41 years, I can hear,’ the MMA legend shared in an emotional post as the first deaf fighter in UFC history.”
His life as a deaf athlete has even been depicted in a movie.
The first deaf fighter in UFC, Matt Hamill, emotionally revealed that he can now hear.
Hamill was born deaf but went on to become a wrestling champion in college and a successful UFC fighter.

Hamill retired with a record of 13-8
He joined the UFC in 2007 and became the first deaf athlete in the organization’s history.
Hamill continued his career, fighting 21 matches and retiring with a record of 13-8.
But his life changed forever in January 2025 when he was fitted with a hearing aid that allowed him to hear for the first time in 41 years.
He posted a photo with his daughter and son, captioned: “I just got the most powerful digital hearing aid ever.”
“For the first time in 41 years, I can finally hear the voices of my children, the sound of people walking around and laughing.
“I can finally hear my mom’s voice, and she cried. I’m also looking forward to hearing my brother Pat’s voice.
“I just hope his voice doesn’t sound like a foghorn. It’s amazing, though I know it will take time to adjust to all of this. Happy New Year!”
Former opponent and British icon Michael Bisping responded: “I couldn’t be happier for you @HamillHammer.”
“No doubt, this is a life-changing moment for you and your family. Congratulations to everyone.”
Hamill’s life as a deaf athlete was depicted in the 2010 movie The Hammer – starring deaf actor Russell Harvard.
The American fighter is the only one to have defeated UFC legend Jon Jones – despite the controversial penalty for an illegal elbow strike.
Hamill’s most recent fight was a victory over Chris Birchler in 2018, and after retiring, he transitioned to a coaching role.
