Curmel Moton’s planned fight against Bryan Mercado has been called off after the 18-year-old missed weight by more than 15 pounds on Friday.

Moton, who is represented by boxing icon Floyd Mayweather, had been due to fight 30-year-old Ecuadoran Mercado at 133 pounds in New Jersey.

But the teenager ended up weighing in at 148.7 pounds.

Moton took to Instagram to explain what led to him failing to make the agreed weight.

He wrote: ‘I’ve been going back and forth with the commission about my bloodwork passing, and as of right now, they lost my blood in their system [which meant the fight was unlikely to be sanctioned].

‘I’ve known this for the past three days, so there was no point in killing myself to make weight.

‘They still made me weigh in for some reason, and they decided that was the reason they were going to cancel the fight.

‘Regardless, I’ll be back in Japan on December 30th [at a potential exhibition involving Ryan Garcia]. See you all there.’

Swift Promotions added in an official statement: ‘The decision to postpone the fight was made in the best interest of all parties involved.

‘While we are disappointed to delay this event, our priority is ensuring that both Curmel and his opponents are set up for the best possible competition.

‘We appreciate the continued support of Curmel’s fans and the boxing community, and we look forward to announcing his return to the ring soon.’

Moton, from Las Vegas, has won his first six fights since turning professional. He has been closely mentored by Mayweather since a very young age.

Mayweather previously recalled: ‘He walked into my gym at around six, seven, maybe eight years old. He worked with his father and different trainers at the gym. I could see that he had a lot of potential. I’m happy that I’m able to be a part of his life and take him to that next level.’
