Featherweight champion Ilia Topuria, known for his previous social media clashes with Conor McGregor and welterweight champion Belal Muhammad, has once again sparked conversation. The controversy surrounding Topuria highlights his ambition to move up in weight divisions. In an interview with El Partidazo de COPE, the reigning featherweight champ admitted he has lost the motivation to defend his title, revealing plans to transition to lightweight and retire by the age of 30.
In the interview Topuria said, “I’m 27, I hope to be out by 30. Right now, in my division, I no longer have the motivation to defend the belt anymore. Now I want to move up a [weight class] and we’ll see how everything goes.”
Reacting to this, Conor McGregor recently weighed in on Topuria’s retirement plans. The Irishman, who achieved tremendous success at Topuria’s age, responded on X, reigniting their verbal rivalry. On X ‘The Notorious’ wrote, “Here’s the truth that will hurt all the little wannabe nobodies. Fighting was too easy for me, I done it all by 27 years old.”
Ilia Topuria Shows Less Interest In Facing Conor McGregor In The Octagon
Topuria once had similar ambitions to McGregor, aiming for a double championship belt. The featherweight champion also expressed interest in sharing the octagon with the former two-division champ one day. However, Topuria’s hope is gradually fading. In a recent interview with El Chiringuito TV, he revealed that he no longer wants his name associated with McGregor due to his ongoing legal issues.
He said, “It interested me, but it doesn’t anymore. He’s going through very serious personal problems. I have no desire to share the octagon with someone like that.”
The Irish fighter was found responsible for assaulting Nikita Hand in 2018. Since being convicted, McGregor has faced several setbacks. However, despite these challenges, fans are still eager to see the two-division champion return to the octagon.
