Amy Adams, the Oscar-nominated actress beloved for her portrayal of Lois Lane in the DC Universe, has officially said her goodbyes to the role. In a recent interview with Variety, Adams shared her thoughts on stepping away from the iconic character, acknowledging that she always knew her time in the Superman franchise was limited.
After playing Lois Lane in 2013’s Man of Steel opposite Henry Cavill as Superman, Adams reprised the role in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League. However, as the DC Universe expanded to include more superheroes and new storylines, Adams found her character gradually moving to the periphery.
“I always understood they were moving in a more Justice League direction,” Adams explained. She noted that her involvement in the franchise was destined to be short-lived, particularly as Warner Bros. pivoted towards creating a larger ensemble of superheroes.
Adams spoke warmly of her co-star Cavill, calling him a “brilliant Superman” and offering her best wishes to future actors taking on the mantle. “I offer every Superman luck and stuff, but I think he was great. I just wanted to say that. It’s so in his spirit,” Adams praised.
Since the last Justice League film, major changes have taken place within the DC film universe. With new leadership under DC Studios co-CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran, the superhero slate has been completely refreshed, and a new chapter for Superman is on the horizon. David Corenswet is set to don the cape as the Man of Steel, and Rachel Brosnahan will step into the shoes of Lois Lane in the upcoming reboot.
Rather than feeling any regret or resentment, Adams expressed excitement about the future of the franchise and admiration for Brosnahan, the star of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. “I love [Brosnahan]. She’s gonna be great. Hopefully the role will be infused with her sensibility and her natural humor and strength and wit. I’m really looking forward to it,” Adams shared.
Reflecting on her time as Lois, Adams emphasized that iconic roles like these are never truly owned by one person. “Coming from theater, a role never belongs to you,” she explained. “You just do a take on it. That’s how I feel about that franchise.”
With grace and gratitude, Amy Adams bids farewell to Lois Lane, acknowledging that her time with the character was fleeting, yet impactful. Her portrayal will undoubtedly remain a memorable chapter in the ongoing legacy of Superman.
